Surplus lines tax: what you need to know

What is surplus lines tax?

Surplus lines tax is a state tax on insurance placed with non-admitted (surplus lines) carriers. Each state sets its own rate, from under 1% to 6% of gross premium. In most states the surplus lines broker collects it and pays it to the state.

What fees apply beyond the surplus lines tax?

Most states charge fees on top of the tax. These include stamping fees (for filing verification), fire marshal taxes, FIGA assessments (Florida Insurance Guaranty Association) and other state-specific regulatory surcharges. The calculator includes the fees each state applies.

Why do surplus lines tax rates differ by state?

Each state regulates its own surplus lines market and sets its own tax rates and fee structures. Some states, like Florida and Texas, have several components; others use a single rate. Rates change when a state legislature or regulator changes them.

How is the SLTax360 calculator different?

Unlike a plain percentage calculator, it includes every state-specific component: stamping fees, fire marshal taxes, FIGA surcharges and minimum or maximum fee thresholds. It reads the same effective-dated rate table SLTax360 files with, so a rate change applies from the day it takes effect.

Want the filing done as well?

SLTax360 files electronically in 24 states and prepares the filing in every other state and DC. A person on your team approves each one before it goes.
